Postpartum Vaginoplasty: Rejuvenate & Restore

Mothers say that giving birth transforms everything, and that’s beautiful. However, that can be less ideal in areas like your intimates. Changes to your body are crucial to a successful pregnancy, but for many women, those changes refuse to take their leave. If you’re seeking a provider for a vaginoplasty in Winter Garden, you’ve come to the right place.

The impact of pregnancy on the vagina and surrounding tissues can disrupt your comfort, confidence, and sexual function. At Horizons OBGYN & Aesthetics, our board-certified OBGYN and fellowship-trained aesthetic surgeon performs postpartum vaginoplasty to revitalize your intimates. Keep reading to learn if this procedure might be right for you.

What is a vaginoplasty?

A vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure for restructuring the vagina and surrounding anatomy. It can treat vaginal laxity, sexual dysfunction, and urinary incontinence. Most vaginoplasty patients are mothers seeking to re-establish their pre-pregnancy anatomy. However, women who have not been pregnant can also undergo vaginoplasties.

Vaginoplasties can address the vaginal canal alone or include a perineoplasty. A perineoplasty is the aesthetic repair of the vaginal opening, This vaginal rejuvenation surgery can serve a variety of purposes.

Other Reasons to Seek Vaginoplasty

A woman might seek a vaginoplasty outside of postpartum recovery for many reasons—often these are personal, sensitive matters:

  • To meet aesthetic goals.
  • To rectify a medical concern (e.g., injury, surgical recovery/accident, muscular atrophy).
  • To resolve a congenital abnormality.
  • To remedy sexual dysfunction (e.g., enhance lubrication, enable orgasm).
  • To reduce discomfort during intercourse.
  • To increase sensation during intercourse.

Whatever the cause for your interest in vaginoplasty, know that the team at Horizons OBGYN & Aesthetics understands and appreciates the vulnerability involved in seeking treatment.

Vaginoplasty Procedure

When we perform a vaginoplasty in Winter Garden, we employ a 3-layer closure considered the “gold standard” of surgical approaches. Every vaginoplasty procedure can be distinct, as not every patient has the same goals for their surgery. The steps for a vaginoplasty could include:

  1. Removing scar tissue.
  2. Placing sutures in the covering of several muscles, rebuilding the vaginal floor.
  3. Gathering and strengthening the thinning layer, further thickening the floor.
  4. Closing the incision and repair with smaller, less irritating sutures that cover the strengthening work below.

Impact of Pregnancy on Your Anatomy

Pregnancy and childbirth can dramatically affect your vaginal muscles and tissues. Common changes include perineal pain, pain during sex, bleeding, and vaginal dryness. How does this happen?

Pregnancy and childbirth can inflict these complications in several ways. The magnitude of complications increases with your number of pregnancies, baby size, and labor duration.

Pregnancy

During pregnancy, the development of your baby widens your vagina and puts pressure on your pelvic floor, weakening those muscles. Your vagina and pelvic floor play important roles in urination, excrement, and sexual function. When weakened, they cannot do their jobs properly, which leads to problems with urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, and more.

Childbirth

During labor, your baby must travel through the vaginal canal, which can widen, weaken, or even tear. After childbirth, your vagina can repair itself, typically taking weeks or months to heal and regain usual function. But often, the vagina never fully returns to normal, resulting in permanent looseness and decreased muscle tone.

Postpartum

Following childbirth, estrogen levels decrease, leading to vaginal dryness and discomfort. This phenomenon more dramatically affects women who are breastfeeding, since lactation reduces estrogen levels. Your hormone levels may or may not self-regulate with time.

Consult an OBGYN

Following pregnancy, it’s normal to require rest and recovery as you heal from the stress put on your body. However, if you’re still experiencing these issues well after pregnancy, communicate transparently with your OBGYN. Together, you can determine when medical intervention may be beneficial or necessary.

Vaginoplasty Treatment Process

Surgery is always an intimidating prospect, and that’s especially true of intimate procedures. That’s why we’ve broken down the treatment process for a vaginoplasty in Winter Garden:

Consultation

Whether you’re in our office for Botox or aesthetic surgery, we customize each step of the process to your needs and goals. To individualize your care, we must first know you as an individual! So at Horizons OBGYN & Aesthetics, we begin every treatment with a one-on-one consultation to discuss your medical and family history, current health, and goals for treatment.

Our OBGYN and aesthetic surgeon will examine the treatment area and your lab work to ensure your candidacy for vaginoplasty. Keep in mind, we generally wait to perform vaginoplasties until a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks after childbirth.

Pre-Operative Appointment

Approximately a week prior to your surgery, we’ll have you into the office to review your pre- and post-operative care. We’ll discuss your at-home instructions and recovery at length. You also have this opportunity to ask any questions before your procedure.

Surgery Appointment

We perform vaginoplasty as an outpatient surgery, meaning you’ll enter and leave the building on the same day. Choosing outpatient services saves you money, since you don’t have to cover the expenses of a surgery center. Typically, the procedure itself takes 1-3 hours.

Checkups

We’ll see you back at Horizons for checkups to ensure you’re healing well from your vaginoplasty in Winter Garden 1 week and 6 weeks post-surgery.

Vaginoplasty Recovery & Post-Operative Care

On average, patients recover from vaginoplasty fully after 8 weeks. However, your exact timeline will vary depending on the extent of your surgery. For the first 1 to 2 weeks following your surgery, limit yourself to very minimal activity to allow yourself time to heal.

Do not participate in exercise, sexual activity, or other vigorous movement for 6 weeks after your procedure. We’ll see you for several follow-up appointments to monitor healing before releasing you to resume your normal routine.

Surgery can eliminate scar tissue, restore muscle support, and reshape the vagina, but the newly restored muscles can still deteriorate without proper post-operative care.

Enhancing & Maintaining Your Results

To sustain the results of your vaginoplasty, we recommend integrating consistent, targeted movements like Kegels or pelvic floor exercises into your daily routine. We offer multiple advanced treatments to further enhance and maintain your vaginoplasty results, including Emfemme vaginal rejuvenation and Emsella pelvic floor therapy.

We strongly recommend integrating Emfemme and Emsella into your pre- and post-care treatment plan. Preemptive efforts to improve your vaginal tissue quality can benefit your vaginoplasty in Winter Garden and help sustain your surgery results long-term.

Emfemme 360 Vaginal Rejuvenation

Emfemme is a nonsurgical approach to vaginal rejuvenation. Using radiofrequency (RF) energy, Emfemme can strengthen your vaginal canal and labia tissues in just 8 minutes. Treatment can improve urinary incontinence, vaginal dryness, and vaginal laxity. Emfemme has the power to transform your relationship with sex and your partner by facilitating increased vaginal tightness, lubrication, and sensitivity.

Emfemme offers clinically proven results with zero downtime. According to the manufacturer, BTL, patients who combine Emfemme and Emsella can experience an average of:

  • 37% increase in elastin: Improves vagina’s ability to resume its normal shape after being stretched
  • 17% increase in collagen: Restores and tightens loose vaginal tissue, enhancing nerve sensitivity
  • 32% increase in vaginal wall thickness: Minimizes discomfort, urinary incontinence, and sexual dysfunction

We recommend 3 to 4 Emfemme treatments to achieve your optimal results. When we pair Emfemme and Emsella with vaginoplasty, you can attain ultimate vaginal rejuvenation and unmatched benefits.

Emsella Pelvic Floor Therapy

Pregnancy and childbirth weaken your pelvic floor muscles, impacting sexual function and urination. While vaginal rejuvenation can strengthen the pelvic floor, it’s difficult to address that entire muscle group without expanding the surgical plan significantly. Emsella pelvic floor therapy uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy integrated into a chair to target and rejuvenate the pelvic floor without incisions or needles.

The Emsella chair is entirely noninvasive; you simply rest on the seat and let the technology do the work. Emitted from the seat of the chair, HIFEM energy stimulates your pelvic floor muscles, causing rapid, powerful contractions. It’s essentially completing Kegel exercise for you at a much faster rate and effective technique. Here are some impressive clinical results on Emsella:

  • 64% improvement in urinary incontinence on average.
  • 57% hygiene pad reduction on average.
  • HIFEM is 7x more effective than Kegel exercise.
