Before At-Home Injections: In-Office Instructions
While self-administering injections isn’t overly complicated, it can feel daunting at first. Before you start your weight loss plan, we make sure you’re comfortable giving yourself Tirzepatide or Semaglutide injections at home by providing in-person instructions.
Medical Weight Loss Injection Steps
Step 1: Gather your supplies.
- Alcohol wipe
- Vial of Semaglutide or Tirzepatide (stored in fridge)
- Syringe
Step 2: Wash your hands and clean the injection site.
- Wash your hands for a minimum of 20 seconds, scrubbing the palms, backs, fingers, and under your nails.
- Use the alcohol wipe to clean your chosen injection site, which can be your stomach, thigh, or the back of your upper arm.
- It’s recommended to use a different injection site each time to reduce irritation.
- Allow the area to dry before moving on.
Step 3: Draw up the medication.
- Begin by opening the vial of Semaglutide or Tirzepatide and removing the needle cap.
- Next, insert the needle into the middle of the rubber stopper and turn the vial and syringe upside down, making sure they stay connected.
- With the needle tip in the liquid, pull the plunger down past your prescribed dose. Then, push up to the dosage line to remove any bubbles.
- When you’ve got the right amount of liquid inside, remove the entire syringe from the vial.
Step 4: Inject the weight loss medication.
- Pinch your chosen injection site with your thumb and forefinger, and ready the syringe.
- Position the needle perpendicular to your skin, and insert it between your 2 fingers.
- Push the plunger rod down steadily until it hits the bottom, and carefully remove the syringe.
- Dispose of the needle in a sharps container.

How do I store my medications?
Keep your injections refrigerated unless we give you different instructions. Heat and direct sunlight can affect GLP-1 medications, so avoid leaving them in cars or near windows. If you’re unsure about if your medication is safe to take anymore, call our office and we can help determine next steps.
What should I do if I forget a dose?
If you forget a dose, but remember within 48 hours, take what you usually would and return to your normal schedule. If it’s been more than 48 hours, contact our team and we can determine the right course of action, whether that’s waiting for your next dose or taking less than usual.
What do I do if I’m traveling?
If you need to travel while on weight loss injections, use an insulated bag or travel cooler to keep the medication cold. However, avoid letting it freeze. If you need to fly with it, keep it on your carry-on to prevent it going through temperature swings.
What if I accidentally inject the medicine too deep or not deep enough?
If you notice the medication hasn’t fully gone in or the area feels uncomfortable, note it in your injection log and continue with your next dose as scheduled. Typically, this isn’t a cause for concern, but when in doubt, contact us for guidance.
